We've used a manual drip brewing system consisting of a carafe, one of the #6 filter cones and a good supply of the #6 filters for years.  We have almost forgotten what an automatic drip coffeemaker looks like - no lime scale building up on a heating element, and our water kettle gets used for manual drip coffee, french press coffee, or tea.  Uses no electricity for brewing (unless you have an electric stove) :)

Manual drip coffee is simple and due to the higher extraction temperature of just off-boil water (195 to 205 degrees F vs. 180 or less with an automatic drip coffeemaker), gets you as close to the aroma and robust flavor of coffeehouse coffee.  Just follow these simple steps:

1. Most water kettles will boil up to 2 liters of water.  Fill your water kettle to just below the neck and put it on your stove with full flame or power if you have an electric stove.
2. While you're waiting for the water to boil, measure and grind approximately 8 level scoops of your favorite whole-bean coffee or if you don't have a grinder, ground coffee (we offer two very excellent grinders if you want to start enjoying the advantages of grinding your own!). Coffee using the manual drip method should be ground to a medium or "manual-drip" grind.
3. Put a #6 paper filter in your filter cone and place it on top of the carafe with the extension holding it steady and add the grounds.
   Once the water kettle starts boiling remove it from the heat and let it sit for about 30 seconds before pouring.
4. Pour the just-off-boil water over the grounds, saturating them and filling the filter cone to a bit below it's edge.  You will instantly notice an aroma you've not noticed before with an automatic-drip coffee maker.
5. Continue pouring until all the water has filtered through, remove the filter cone and replace the top on the carafe.
6. Decant some of the most amazing coffee you will ever taste, add condiments if you prefer and enjoy!
